Prohibited and dangerous articles. Cabin baggage; Hold baggage.


Some articles can put a risk to the safety of the aircraft or the passengers and, for that reason, the transport of those articles is prohibited or limited by regulation.
Articles discovered in security-restricted areas will be apprehended. The transportation of articles in commercial quantities must be made as cargo.
The lists below are subject to any amendments proposed by the regulatory authorities.
 

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Prohibited article(s).
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed only on flights within Portugal, subject to transport conditions.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     

Devices that can or appear to be capable of being used to cause serious injury by firing a projectile, including:

  • All types of firearms, such as pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns;
  • Toy guns, replicas, or imitations of firearms that may be mistaken for real guns;
  • Firearm components, except telescopic sights;
  • Compressed air and CO2 guns, such as pistols, pellet guns, rifles, and ball bearing guns;
  • Signal flare pistols and starter pistols;
  • Bows, crossbows, and arrows;
  • Harpoon guns and spear guns;
  • Slings and slingshots.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Prohibited article(s).
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to transport conditions.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     

Requirements:
Only ammunition classified according to UN 0012 Div. 1.4 S or UN 0014 is accepted.

  • Weapons and ammunition must be packed in two separate containers;
  • The weapons are accepted unloaded and with the documents required by law;
  • Ammunition must be securely packaged using appropriate commercial containers;
  • The gross weight of the package and ammunition must not exceed 5 kg (11.02 lb);
  • Passengers traveling together cannot carry the sum of the allowed weight per passenger in one package.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Prohibited article(s).
  • Carry as hold baggage: Prohibited article(s).

Devices specifically intended to stun or immobilize, including:

  • Devices for shocking, such as stun guns, Tasers, and stun batons;
  • Animal stunners and animal killers;
  • Disabling and incapacitating chemicals, gases, and sprays, such as mace, pepper sprays, capsicum sprays, tear gas, acid sprays, and animal repellent sprays.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Prohibited article(s).
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to transport conditions.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.

Objects that, because of their sharp point or sharp edges, can be used to cause serious injury, including:

  • Items designed for chopping, such as axes, hatchets, and cleavers;
  • Ice axes and ice picks;
  • Razor blades;
  • Box cutters;
  • Knives with blades longer than 6 cm (2.4 in);
  • Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm (2.4 in), measured from the fulcrum;
  • Pointed and sharp martial arts equipment;
  • Swords and sabers.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Prohibited article(s)
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to transport conditions.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     

Objects that can cause serious injury if used to physically assault someone, including:

  • Baseball and softball bats;
  • Clubs and batons, such as blackjacks, billy clubs, and nightsticks;
  • Martial arts equipment.

  • Carry as hold baggage: Prohibited article(s)
     

Explosive and incendiary materials and devices that can or appear likely to be used to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Ammunition;
  • Blasting shells;
  • Detonators and fuses;
  • Replica or imitation of explosive devices;
  • Mines, grenades, and other military explosives;
  • Fireworks and other pyrotechnics (devices);
  • Smoke-generating canisters and Smoke-generating cartridges;
  • Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Prohibited articles(s).
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to transport conditions.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     

Tools that can be used to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Crowbars;
  • Drills and drill bits, including cordless portable power drills;
  • Tools with a blade or a shaft longer than 6 cm (2.4 in), capable of use as a weapon, such as screwdrivers and chisels;
  • Saws, including cordless portable power saws;
  • Blowtorches;
  • Bolt guns and nail guns.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed. *
     
Requirements:
  1. Airline approval is not required when:
    1. Each installed or spare battery does not exceed:
      1. for lithium metal or lithium alloy batteries, a lithium content of not more than 2 g; or
      2. for lithium-ion batteries, a watt-hour rating of no more than 100 Wh.
         
  2. Airline approval is required for:
    1. Each installed or spare battery** exceeds:
      1. for lithium-ion batteries, a watt-hour rating of more than 100 Wh, but not more than 160 Wh.
         
  3. The passenger may carry the drone in carry-on or hold baggage, provided it is well-packed and protected and carries the lithium batteries built into the drone itself.

* If the batteries are removed from the drone, the batteries and any spare batteries must be transported in carry-on luggage.
** Maximum two additional replacement batteries.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     
Requirements:
  • Baggage with non-removable lithium batteries – the battery may not exceed 0.3 g of lithium metal, or lithium-ion batteries may not exceed 2.7 Wh. Baggage equipped with batteries exceeding these values is prohibited;
  • Baggage with removable batteries – batteries must be removed if the baggage is checked into the hold. Removed batteries are carried in the cabin.

NOTE: Baggage with installed / built-in non-removable lithium batteries exceeding 0.3 g of lithium metal or 2.7 Wh of lithium-ion is prohibited for transport in either the cabin or the hold.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.4
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     

Requirements:
Carried for personal use.

  • The installed or replacement batteries must not exceed:
    1. Lithium metal or lithium alloy batteries – lithium content 2 g or less;
    2. Lithium-ionic batteries – lithium content of 100 Wh or less;
    3. Batteries and/or cells must be of a type that meets the requirements in the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3;
    4. The passenger must ensure that the device does not activate accidentally.
      For example, watches, calculating machines, cameras, cell phones, etc.
       
4 It is not recommended to be transported as hold baggage.
 

Spares for these electronic devices may only be carried in cabin baggage, protected against short circuits:

  • Insulating the terminals (for example, by taping the exposed terminals);
  • Placed in the original packaging;
  • Putting each spare battery in a separate case;
  • Baggage equipped with lithium batteries, except button batteries, must be removable. In cases where the baggage must go in the hold, the battery will have to be carried in the cabin.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.5
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     
Requirements:
  • Batteries – 12 V or less, or 100 Wh or less;
  • Device – protected against accidental activation, or the batteries removed with the terminals insulated;
  • A maximum of two (2) spare batteries;
  • Each spare battery must be insulated against short circuits (for example, by taping the exposed terminals).
5 It is not recommended to be transported as hold baggage.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.

Requirements:
Lithium-ion batteries with nominal energy in Watt-hours of more than 100 Wh, but not exceeding 160 Wh. For medical electronic devices only, lithium metal batteries with a lithium content exceeding 2 g but not exceeding 8 g.

NOTE: Its transport as hold baggage is not advisable.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.3
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     

For powering portable electronic devices such as cameras, cell phones, laptops, and camcorders.
 

Requirements:
  • Cell system and/or fuel cell cartridge complying with the specifications of IEC 62282-6-100 Ed.1, including Amendment 1, and must be marked with certification confirming the specification. Additionally, each cell or cartridge must be marked with the maximum quantity and type of fuel;
  • Maximum amount of fuel per cell or cartridge system:
    1. Liquids – 200 ml or less;
    2. Solids – 200 g or less;
    3. Liquefied gases – a maximum of 120 ml for non-metallic fuel cells and cartridges, or 200 ml for metal fuel cells and cartridges;
    4. For hydrogen in metal hydride – water capacity of 120 ml or less;
  • Fuel cells cannot charge the portable electronic device’s battery when it is turned off and must be marked by the manufacturer with “Approved for transport in aircraft cabin only”.

NOTE: Recharging the cell with fuel onboard is prohibited. Only a spare cartridge can be installed.

Requirements:
Only accepted without batteries or other dangerous goods.

  • The engine tank may not be transported if it has already contained any type of liquid fuel.
NOTE: Internal combustion engines and cells powered by flammable gas are prohibited.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Not allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     

Requirements:
The user must confirm at check-in the type of battery he/she is carrying, whether it is a non-spillable battery that meets the special provision A67, a nickel-metal hydride battery, or a dry battery.

  1. Collapsible wheelchair or mobility device – the battery must be removed by the user if the wheelchair or mobility device is specifically designed to allow it, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
    The terminals are protected from short circuits, for example, by being placed inside a suitable battery container;
    • The battery must be removed and placed in a strong, rigid package, transported in the hold, and the terminals protected from short-circuit (e.g., by taping the exposed terminals together);
    • Non-spillable batteries must not contain any free or unabsorbed liquid;
    • The wheelchair is carried in the hold without restriction.
       
  2. Non-detachable wheelchair or mobility device – the battery should be securely fastened to the wheelchair and the electrical circuits insulated, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
    The passenger may carry a maximum of:
    • One spare, non-spillable dry battery that complies with Special Provision A67; or
    • Two spare nickel-metal hydride batteries that meet Special Provision A199 or two spare dry batteries that meet Special Provision A123.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Not allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     

Requirements:
Handled, transported, loaded, and unloaded, always in an upright position.
The battery should be equipped, whenever possible, with spill-resistant caps;

  1. Collapsible wheelchair or mobility device – the battery is removed by the passenger, if the wheelchair or mobile device is specifically designed to allow it, following the manufacturer's instructions.
    The battery removed from the wheelchair or mobility device, or spare battery, must be delivered for transport in strong, rigid packaging;
    • The package must be watertight, impervious to battery fluid and protected against damage, secured to a pallet or in the cargo compartment using suitable means of restraint (do not lock the movement with other cargo or baggage), such as straps, ropes, or other restraining devices;
    • The batteries must be protected against short circuits, secured in a vertical position inside this package, and wrapped in absorbent material compatible and sufficient to fully absorb the liquid contained; and
    • The package must be marked “BATTERY, WET, WITH WHEELCHAIR” or “BATTERY WET, WITH MOBILITY AID” and labeled with the “Corrosive” label and two “Orientation” labels on opposite sides.
       
  2. Non-detachable wheelchair or mobility device – the battery is firmly attached to the wheelchair or mobility device, and the electrical circuits are insulated following the manufacturer’s instructions:
    • The electric circuits must be disconnected, and the terminals protected from short circuits, for example, placed inside a suitable battery container.
NOTE: Wheelchairs or mobility devices with dimensions that cannot always be carried in an upright position will not be accepted without prior authorization and specific instructions.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Not allowed.6
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     

Requirements:
Batteries in compliance with the requirements of the Tests and Criteria, part III, subsection 38.3.

  1. For non-detachable wheelchairs or mobility devices – the battery is firmly attached to the wheelchair or mobility device and the electrical circuits are insulated following the manufacturer’s instructions:
    • The electrical circuits must be disconnected;
    • Passenger must prove that the battery meets the requirements by presenting a certificate or statement from the manufacturer.
       
  2. For detachable wheelchairs or mobility devices – the battery must be removed by the user, if it is specifically designed to allow it, following the manufacturer’s instructions:
    • The battery removed from the wheelchair or mobility device, or spare battery, must be delivered for transport in a strong, rigid package properly labeled for cabin transport;
    • The battery must be protected from short circuits by insulating the terminals (example: taping the exposed terminals).

NOTE: The battery must not exceed 300 Wh. The passenger may carry a maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160 Wh.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Permission subject to conditions.*
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     

* The transport of liquids on board is only allowed in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml and not exceeding a total of 1 liter per passenger.
They should be packed in a transparent plastic bag with an easy opening and closing system, with dimensions of 19 cm x 20 cm.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.1
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     
Requirements:
  • 5 (five) liters (ca. 1.32 gallons) per passenger;
  • In the original container and packaged appropriately for transport to prevent breaking and/or spilling.

Forbidden – pressurized keg, bottle with carbon dioxide or similar gases.

Requirements:
  • The total quantity per passenger of non-radioactive medical or hygiene articles, including aerosols, may not exceed 2 kg (4.4 lb) or 2 l (ca 0.53 gal), and each article individually may not exceed 0.5 kg (1.1 lb) or 0.5 l (0.13 gal);
  • The aerosol release valve must be protected by a cap, or other suitable means, to prevent the contents from being released. Example: hair sprays, perfumes, colognes, and medications that contain alcohol.

  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.

Requirements:
In insulated packaging, completely absorbed in a porous material, and intended for low-temperature preservation (dry shipper) of items not subject to dangerous good regulations.

  • The insulating packaging must not allow pressure to build up, nor must it allow the contents to be released regardless of their position.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     

Requirements:
Used to preserve perishables not subject to dangerous goods regulations.

  • Maximum 2.5 kg (5 lb) per passenger;
  • The packaging must allow the release of the carbon dioxide;
  • The packaging must be identified with an additional “dry ice” label and the inscription of the net weight.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.

Used for the operation of mechanical prosthetics, as well as replacements of an equivalent size, needed to ensure an adequate supply for the duration of the trip.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     

Requirements:
Containing carbon dioxide or other suitable gas within division 2.2.

  • Two small cylinders, installed in a self-inflating safety device for personal use (example: life jacket);
  • Only one device and up to two spare cylinders are allowed per passenger;
  • For other devices, the limit is four cylinders with a maximum capacity of 50 ml (0.01 gal) of water.

Requirements:
Only allowed on the person
Or other devices, including those powered by lithium batteries, implanted in the person, or installed externally.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions
  • Carry as hold baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     
Requirements:
  • One (1) per passenger;
  • The safety cap must be securely mounted on the heating element;
  • Gas supplements for the curlers are prohibited, both as hold baggage and in the cabin;
  • The hair curler cannot be used onboard.

Requirements:
Only allowed on the person

  • A small package of safety matches;
  • A small butane or Zippo cigarette lighter.

NOTE: “Strike anywhere” matches, “blue flame” or “cigar” lighters are forbidden for air transportation. Lighter fuel and lighter refills are also forbidden. The carriage of lighters that are powered by a lithium battery without a safety cap or means of protection against accidental activation is prohibited.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed, subject to acceptance conditions.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Not allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Not required.
     
Requirements:
  • They can only be transported in the cabin, properly protected. The following transport conditions must be observed when transporting spare batteries / recharges:
    • Recharges protected against short circuits;
    • By insulating the terminals (for example, by taping the exposed terminals);
    • Refills must be transported in the original packaging or in separate cases.

NOTE: For safety reasons, there may be additional restrictions depending on the aircraft operating the flight.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.
  • Carry as hold baggage: Not allowed.
  • Previous notification and approval by the airline – Required.
     
Requirements:
  • It should be transported in a strong outer package with a sealed liner or leak-proof bag and mercury-resistant material;

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.

Requirements:

  • The airbags inside the backpack must be equipped with pressure valves.

  • Carry as cabin baggage: Allowed.

Requirements:

  • The aerosol release valve must be protected by a cap, or other suitable means, to prevent the contents from being released.

Liquids, aerosols, and gels
 

The transport of liquids on board is only allowed in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml and not exceeding a total of 1 liter per passenger.
They should be packed in a transparent plastic bag with an easy opening and closing system, with dimensions of 19 cm x 20 cm.

Passengers may not carry the following items in their hold baggage:

 

Incendiary and explosive substances and devices
 

Explosive and incendiary materials and devices that can, or appear likely to be used to cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Ammunition;
  • Blasting shells;
  • Detonators and fuses;
  • Mines, grenades, and other military explosives;

  • Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

 

Baggage equipped with lithium batteries
 

Baggage with installed / built-in non-removable lithium batteries exceeding 0.3 g of lithium metal or 2.7 Wh of lithium-ion is prohibited for transport in either the cabin or the hold.

Passengers cannot carry the following items in their hold baggage or carry-on baggage on SATA Azores Airlines flights:

  • Suitcases or briefcases with pyrotechnic devices and lithium batteries;
  • Fuel for cigarette lighters;
  • Paint strippers, bleaches, and chlorine;
  • Flammable liquids, such as fuel, paint, thinner, solvent, and acetone;
  • Toxic, infectious, and radioactive materials;
  • Chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides;
  • Paints, varnishes, and lacquers;
  • Gases;
  • Life rafts and fuel-powered machines;
  • Camp stoves and containers that have contained flammable liquid fuel or flammable gases;

  • Bottles that are not properly secured;
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 7;
  • Small lithium battery-powered mobility vehicles (example: Airwheel; Solowheel; Hoverboard; Mini-segway; Balance wheel; Electric scooters and bicycles).
