Important battery information

It is important that you provide to us all information concerning your electronic device as well specifications of the battery(ies) that you need to transport up to 48 hours before departure of your flight at the time of booking.

Spillable wet batteries

Is permitted only to transport in the hold, it needs an approval by SATA Azores Airlines and if fulfil all the requirements below:

  • The battery is disconnected;
  • Terminals must be protected against short circuits and protected with spill resistant vent caps;
  • The battery must be transported in the original packaging or placed individually into a rigid and impermeable package to liquids and adequately identified;
  • Battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid (in case if remains installed on the mobility device).

Non-spillable wet batteries

Passengers may transport wheelchairs or other battery-powered mobility aids that complies with special provision A67, or a nickel-metal hydride battery or dry battery if fulfil all the requirements below:

  • The battery is disconnected;
  • Terminals must be protected against short circuits and protected with spill resistant vent caps;
  • The battery must be transported in the original packaging or placed individually into a rigid and impermeable package to liquids and adequately identified;
  • Battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid (in case if remains installed on the mobility device);
  • Is only allowed to carry a maximum of one spare battery.

Lithium-ion batteries

When the wheelchairs or mobility aid contains lithium-ion battery in the unit and it allows the battery to be removed by the user (e.g. collapsible), the transportation is subject to the following conditions:

  • The battery must be protected from short circuit by insulating the terminals (e.g. by taping adhesive tape over exposed terminals and being enclosed within a battery container);
  • The removed or spare batteries must be protected from damage (e.g. by placing each battery in a protective pouch). The battery must be carried in the passenger cabin;
  • A maximum of one spare battery must not exceeding 300 Wh or for a device that is fitted with two batteries required for operation, each battery must not exceed 160 Wh (the batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits).

  • Electronic cigarettes and others vaporizers
    These personal devices may only be carried as cabin baggage, and refills must be carried in your checked baggage. You should be careful to take preventative measures to avoid accidental activation.

  • Baggage with integrated lithium batteries – “smart luggage”
    Smart luggage is the baggage that contains a battery to charge or to recharge other devices. This type of smart bags may include lithium battery, gps device, bluetooth, wi-fi technology, etc.

    • Acceptance procedures:
      • If the battery installed on this type of baggage is removable you must remove it from the device and the lithium battery must be carried in the cabin with you (as long as the specifications comply with the provisions of portable electronic batteries, i.e. 100 watt-hours (Wh) lithium-ion and 2 grams of lithium metal);
      • If the battery installed on the baggage is not removable, and does not exceed 0.3 grams of lithium metal, or not exceeding 2.7 Watt-hours (Wh) lithium-ion, your baggage can be transported in the cabin with you ( complying with all the cabin baggage procedures of our company) or as checked baggage;
      • If the battery installed on the baggage is not removable, exceeding the 0.3 grams of lithium metal as well exceeding 2.7 Watt-hours (Wh) lithium-ion, the transport of your smart baggage is not allowed.
